Some people know me as "Joe the Radio Guy." I got my start in radio in Ann Arbor Michigan at Radio Free Ann Arbor
During my four or so years of active involvement I did a lot of things. Although not well documented my production skills were legendary. I used production skills and voice chararactizations. This experience taught me how to script out every aspect of the sound production. I expressed myself through numerous freeforms shows teaming up with such WCBN greats as Dolby Blanchard, Kirk Jobe and the mysterious Akin D. Reinhardt. I co-produced a public affairs program that tackled tough issues as a long term chemical spill and a grocery store strike.I was always controversial an not always on the "right" side on an issue. For a while I was a guest host on the
The Down Home Show.

Here is a picture of me which originally appeared in the Ann Arbor News in April of 1992.

I wrote this article for their program guide about East German radio station DT64 My friend Starfish should get some credit for this article because he was my main source.Click Here to see some photos of DT64 and some of the protests surroundings it closing. The station closed in 1994. DT64 surivives in the form of radio station Sputnik.
By the time it was time for me to move on, I had risen to the honorable posistion of Production Director.

Perhaps one of my most cherished moments of WCBN was when my punk rock band Rodent Kontrol played live on The All Out Attack.

In 1994 I left Ann Arbor to seek my fortune in Philadelphia PA. I got a internship at a public radio staion affiliated with The University of Pennsylvania, WXPN Among other things I worked on a show called The World Cafe. I mixed bands, mastered CDS,digital and analog editing and tons of grunt work. Over all it was worthwhile. During the four or so years there I learned a lot about radio productions and saw some really great music. I met a lot of my musical heros likeLou Reed( When Lou Reed came in we were all standing around meeting him and discussing the set-up for the session, when he said "Are we going to just stand here with are dicks hanging-out? Or are we going to do this?" So we got to work right away. I guess you could say that Lou Reed is an asshole for being so rude, but I just thought it was funny.) David Byrne,Elvis Costello,Wayne Kramer(of the MC5), Beck, Cornershop Were some of the other folks that came through. I will soon have a small photo gallery up of some of the folks I met. It was great working with the World Cafe and learning about music and production but in my heart I knew, and still know, that journalism is closer to my true calling.I kicked around the idea of producing a an NPR radio story for quite a while. The subject was the Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled (PRPD) They are a group of disabled rowers and volunteers who have been rowing on the Schukyll River in Philadelphia for over 20 years. At the encouragment of others I submited for some awards. It won two awards and was broadcast on XPN and on WHYY. ( Fresh Air)In March of 1998 I was awarded an Achievement in Radio (AIR) Award for "Best Featue". In July of 1998 it won The Edward R. Murrow Award for "Best Feature Reporting" It was quite an experience.
